Fitzgerald Public Schools has an opening for a Director of Business.  This is a twelve (12) month, 52 week non-bargaining position. 


The Director of Business will serve as a member of the Superintendent’s cabinet and be responsible for the overall management of the financial accounting of the district including identifying, developing, implementing and managing the financial and business matters of the Fitzgerald Public Schools. 

Manages and supervises the business office staff.  Areas of responsibility include budgeting, negotiations, cash management, accounting and reporting, payroll, purchasing, insurance, financial policy development, overseeing special projects, and grant funding.


  • Bachelor’s Degree in Business with major or coursework in accounting required
  • CPA, CFM or MBA preferred
  • Michigan School Business Certification preferred
  • Minimum five (5) years in the field of accounting and three (3) years of managerial experience
  • Demonstrated effective administrative and leadership skills
  • Ability to analyze accounting data and make necessary adjustments


  • Minimum three (3) years accounting and supervisory experience preferably within a Michigan School District
  • Proficient in excel, word, accounting system
  • Knowledge of the AS400
  • Analytical and report preparation
  • Strong communication and customer service skills
  • Project management


  • Supervise, manage and develop department staff, which includes payroll, accounts payable, banking, accounts receivable.  Assist with cross training staff members.
  • Oversee the fiscal management of grants, prepare SEFA
  • Work with State and local auditors in completing their respective audits
  • Oversee compliance with Federal and State grants
  • Procedures and training - analyze for efficiency, internal controls, administration and oversight. Effectively document procedures and processes.  Ensure communication for successful implementation and monitor adherence
  • Cash management, including banking, cash flow and investments
  • Prepare or review all State and Federal fiscal reports, including but not limited to FID, SE4096, SE4094, VOC4033
  • Budget monitoring, analysis and reporting on an as needed basis
  • Attend Board of Education meetings on a monthly basis
  • Taxes: Preparation of L4029, tracking of payments, reconciling tax settlements, monitor pending tax tribunals
  • Main point of contact for preparation, completion and distribution of annual financial audit
  • Point person for finance system implementation and internal controls
  • Coordinate development of hardware and software acquisition criteria and implementation process
  • Review purchasing procedures to assure proper internal controls are in place and being followed
  • Monitor large purchases to assure they are bid in accordance with Board policy
  • Coordinate purchase and financing of the Districts needs to maximize compatibility, standardization, and cost effectiveness
  • Supervises the cafeteria department operations and monitors the program’s profitability and reports the results to the Board on a regular basis
  • Obtains competitive bid quotations from school food service contractors for the Board’s approval
  • Perform other duties as assigned

  • Successful experience in training and mentoring
  • Ability to interact with grant administrators
  • Ability to clearly communicate financial information to a variety of stakeholders

REPORTS TO:                            Superintendent of Schools

TERMS OF EMPLOYMENT:     Administrator’s contract, non-tenured

SALARY:                                     Based upon education and experience
