Superintendent Selection Criteria

 

Ida Public Schools is seeking a strong, collaborative leader to work with the staff, students, community and school board to create a successful educational experience for all. The Board of Education of Ida Public Schools has identified the following criteria for the next superintendent of this close-knit community.

Professional Background

  • Possesses a minimum of a Master’s degree plus administrative certification
  • Administrative experience
  • Proven record of success in raising student achievement
  • Prefer experience working with students as classroom teacher or in a similar capacity
  • Knowledgeable in budgeting practices that promote best use of resources
  • Skilled evaluator

The Ida Public Schools Board of Education has determined that the following criteria are those which are most highly sought in a new superintendent/building administrator:

  • The Board of Education shall exercise its executive power in part by the appointment of a Superintendent who shall enforce the statutes of the State of Michigan, rules of the State Board of Education, and the policies of this Board.
  • Exemplifies the highest level of personal and professional ethics, personal integrity and trust

 

  • A visionary leader with the ability to engage all stakeholders in the pursuit of a clear vision for the district that is focused on student achievement, professional conduct and civility, improving financial prioritization, stability and communication
  • Leadership experience in a traditional public-school setting that reflects a record of success in positions of increasing responsibility with administrative experience; however non-traditional candidates with proper credentials and background may be considered
  • A school leader who is approachable and treats everyone with respect and dignity
  • A leader who brings fresh ideas and yet is open to ideas and suggestions from a variety of sources within the school community
  • Demonstrates strong interpersonal and public relations skill; provides timely and detailed responses to all questions and concerns
  • Demonstrates transparency in decision-making, provides rationale to promote understanding around difficult choices
  • Instills systems, processes and procedures that promote efficiency
  • Dedication to educational excellence and the success of all students
  • A school leader who understands student growth and the impact it has on facilities, finance and staffing
  • Demonstrates knowledge of and experience with effective curriculum, instruction, assessment, professional development and best practices to improve teaching and student achievement

  • Demonstrates knowledge and successful experience in public school finance and fiscal management; including bond issues and related experiences
  • Knowledge and passion for facility maintenance and operations, including support services, facility studies, improvements, bonding opportunities and facility utilization
  • Demonstrates success in human resource management, including collective bargaining contract administration and employment practices
  • A leader who sets high expectations for self and others; holds staff at all levels accountable and accepts responsibility for results
  • A leader who demonstrates the ability to develop and direct an effective leadership team
  • A leader who demonstrates a strong working relationship with staff, board members, students and the community
  • Establishes direction through long-range strategic planning

  • Demonstrates track record of direct involvement and knowledge of politics of public education in a small school setting and at the intermediate, state and federal levels

  • Resides within 20 miles or less of the perimeter of the school district
  • Proven leadership ability with skills in implementing change, collaboration, successful systems, creative problem solving, intelligent risk taking, decision making, team building and eager to seek feedback
  • Desire to be involved in other leadership opportunities at the local, regional and state level, such as Monroe County ISD, MASA Region 8, local organizations
  • Other responsibilities based on NEOLA policy 1230 and 1230.01

 

Salary and Contract Information

The Board of Education will offer a comprehensive, multi-year contract. Salary and benefits will be commensurate with the skills and experience of the successful candidate, with a salary range of $105,000-$120,000.

Second Round Interviews: Week of May 13, 2019 (will include an open session with BOE, side

meeting with Administration and Staff, plus a site visit of IPS’s district and Board Committee visit to your district if necessary)

Candidate Selection by Board of Education: Monday, June 10, 2019 (Board Meeting or before) New Superintendent Start Date: Monday, July 1, 2019 (or before)

This superintendent search will be conducted with due regard to the Michigan Open Meetings Act (Public Act 267 of 1976) requirement of open meetings for all public body deliberations, decisions and interviews.

The Board of Education may make exceptions to this profile, posting, process and/or timeline to ensure selection of the best candidates as determined solely by the Board. The Board of Education will make all decisions with respect to process, evaluation of candidates, selection of candidates to be interviewed and appointment of the successful candidate.
