POSITION TITLE:              K-12 Principal

REPORTS TO:                   Superintendent

JOB SUMMARY:

Northport Public School is a rural district located at the northern end of Leelanau County.  It is a single building district with approximately 150 students and 18 teachers.  The administration currently consists of only a superintendent; however, that position’s roles and responsibilities will be shared with the hiring of a principal.

Through collaboration and student produced evidence of learning, the students of Northport Public School will understand the world around them and be able to use their skills and knowledge to be successful citizens in the 21st century and beyond.

 

QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Master’s Degree in Educational Leadership or Administration.
  • Possession of/eligibility for Michigan School Administrator Certificate.
  • Valid Michigan Teaching Certificate.
  • Minimum of (5) years exemplary teaching experience.
  • Experience with EL Education, Big Picture Learning, Coalition of Essential Schools, Buck Institute for Education, or other comparable model.
  • Minimum of (3) years exemplary building administrator experience, preferred.

 

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Act with integrity, fairness and in an ethical manner.
  • Maintain an atmosphere of trust, respect, interest and enthusiasm within the school.
  • Demonstrate extensive knowledge of the district visions for high quality, subject specific instruction and the capacity to coach teachers for growth in instructional routines.
  • Manage, evaluate, and supervise effective and clear procedures for the operation and functioning of a school consistent with the philosophy, mission, values, and goals of the district.
  • Evaluate staff in a timely manner and provide feedback for individual professional growth.
  • Embrace change and innovation and possess the ability to envision and actualize learning beyond the traditional walls of the classroom and school.
  • Establish and promote high standards and expectations for all students and staff.
  • The ability to clearly articulate intentional actions, the rationale behind them, and the challenges to expect along the way.
  • Lead the school community in data-driven decisions based on state standards and results from multiple data points, which include, but are not limited to: NWEA, school-based assessments, attendance, and discipline records to inform a continuously responsive and adaptive system of tiered instruction.
  • Supervise the instructional programs of the school through regular, ongoing observation of classrooms and feedback to staff regarding use of instructional strategies and materials consistent with research on learning alongside child growth and development.
  • Supervise in a fair and consistent manner while enacting effective discipline and attendance systems with high standards, consistent with the philosophy, values, and mission of the district. 
  • Establish a professional rapport with students, staff, colleagues, and the greater school community that promotes mutual respect through display of the highest ethical and professional behavior and standards.
  • Supervise and monitor student activities such as lunch, recess, assemblies, concerts, and sports events, assign supervisory faculty for all student activities.
  • Communicate regularly and effectively with parents to create cooperative relationships that support students in the school and at home.
  • Involve staff in the decision making process.
  • Understand need to balance work and personal commitments for self and employees.
  • Maintain visibility with students, staff, parents, and the district community.
  • Perform other related duties as assigned by supervisor.

 

SALARY AND BENEFITS:           Commensurate with experience
