Middle School Counselor

2019-2020 School Year

The Coopersville Middle School Counselor helps students attain a good quality level of personal and social adjustment. In order to coordinate a counseling program, the Coopersville Middle School Counselor must work closely with the other staff and administration of Coopersville Area Public Schools.

Responsible to:          Middle School Principal


  1. Master’s degree from an accredited college/university
  2. Two - Five years of effective or highly effective teaching experience
  3. Two – Four years counseling experience
  4. Current Teaching Certificate with appropriate NT endorsement

Knowledge, Skill, and Abilities:

  1. Strong Initiative and self-directed individual, to help support students in working collaboratively to develop and implement support systems and structures.
  2. Strong Interpersonal skills and the ability to work with a wide range of stakeholders to benefit our students.
  3. Strong organizational skills and the ability to collaborate with all staff members to support the work of our students.
  4. Work with parents, teachers, administrators, and supporting agencies concerning the needs and abilities of students.
  5. Ensure that all activities conform to district guidelines.
  6. Communicate effectively with all members of the school district and community.
  7. React to change productively and handle other tasks as assigned.
  8. Maintain confidentiality at all times and use discreet communications.
  9. Support the philosophy and mission of Coopersville Area Public Schools.

Physical Requirements/Environmental Conditions:

  1. Requires prolonged sitting or standing.
  2. Occasionally requires physical exertion to manually move, lift, carry, pull, or push heavy objects or materials.
  3. Occasionally requires stooping, bending, and reaching.

General Responsibilities:

  1. Provide individual counseling and group guidance to help students cope effectively with personal, social, academic, career, and family concerns.
  2. Lead and coordinate required Michigan Career Development Model for Grades  6-8
  3. Work collaboratively with High School counseling staff and others as a part of a district team to help define required K-5 career awareness models.
  4. Update and maintain confidential student records including cumulative transcripts and student files.
  5. Experience using Infinite Campus for all functions including discipline, grades, and attendance.
  6. Experience with master scheduling using Infinite Campus.
  7. Implement an effective program of educational and career planning.
  8. Assist with enrollment to ensure that students complete courses appropriate to their needs.
  9. Assist in a continuous program of student orientation.
  10. Assist with the activities of student organizations.
  11. Attend and assist when necessary with school events such as musical programs, athletics, student recognition ceremonies, and open house.
  12. See that district policies are observed during all activities.
  13. Obtain advance approval of the principal for all activities and expenditures.
  14. Adhere to all district health and safety policies.
  15. Reliable, consistent attendance is a requirement and essential function for all staff positions.
  16. Other duties as assigned by the principal or other administrative staff which are consistent with the general requirements and qualifications for the position.
