Position Details: 

Position: Director of Athletics and Youth Recreation
Weeks of Work:  Full Time; 52 weeks
JOB GOAL:  Under the general supervision of the High School Principal, this position is responsible for the administration and supervision of Charlotte Public Schools’ K-12 athletics and youth recreation sports programs.
An individual shall possess, upon application, the following minimal experience or its satisfactory equivalent:

  • Master’s degree required in a leadership-related field
  • Minimum of 5 years director experience in creating, organizing, conducting and administering interscholastic athletics and youth recreation programs.
  • Current special certifications: CPR, First Aid, AED or willing to obtain.
  • Demonstrated ability to build and maintain rapport with students, staff, parents, volunteers and community agencies.
  • Must be a highly motivated, action oriented individual who can take charge and get things done and modify when things aren’t going as planned.
  • Be a professional at all times and present a positive, optimistic attitude as an ambassador for the District.
  • Able to oversee and monitor physical activities that may be strenuous, both indoors and out, in all weather conditions, and will include evening and weekend hours.
  • Must be able to lift, carry, and manage equipment and supplies.
  • Ability to perform the essential duties of the position with or without accommodation.
  • Ability to solve practical problems and deal with a variety of concrete variables in situations where only limited standardization exists.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills.

AREAS OF RESPONSIBILITY/ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS:  The Director of Athletics and Youth Recreation will be expected to develop and carry out a vision for success in the Charlotte Public Schools’ athletics and youth recreation sports programs. He or she will directly supervise the Assistant Director of Athletics and Youth Recreation and maintain a collaborative working relationship and ensure a seamless interface in the programming of K-12 athletics and youth recreation.
Athletics & Youth Recreation Programming

  • Align expectations for students, coaches, and staff from the recreation to Varsity level.
  • Approve each interscholastic athletic contest and prepare, sign, and keep on file all school contracts for the contest.
  • Take an active role in recruiting, screening and recommending candidates for coaching positions.
  • Serve as a resource person to the principal and coaches in formulation of policies and regulations relative to interscholastic and youth recreation sports.
  • Establish the budget, its limitations, and control expenditures in collaboration with administration.
  • Administer performance evaluations for all Varsity Coaches and the evaluations of sub Varsity coaching staff.
  • File all records relative to interscholastic and youth recreation activities.
  • Establish, with the assistance of administrators, coaches’ representatives, and faculty representatives the policies under which the interscholastic athletic programs of the schools and youth recreation programs are going to function.
  • Represent the school district with M.H.S.A.A. and all other secondary school leagues, with whom we are affiliated, in all matters of interscholastic policies.
  • Maintain up-to-date knowledge of all rules and regulations with regard to M.H.S.A.A. and ensure district compliance.
  • Coordinate summer camp opportunities and clinics for players and volunteer coaches.
  • Continue to build upon the youth recreation programming through collaborative community engagement.
  • Coordination of any part-time staff, or volunteers, and coordination of calendar for all registrations, seasons, tournament events, and other related activities.
  • Oversee community sponsors in support of specific programs, teams, or events.
  • Maintain inventory of equipment.
  • Train and supervise recreation staff and volunteers in program expectations, district standards and safety.
  • Coordinate coaching staff to assure that regulations and coaching responsibilities are discharged effectively.
  • Facilitate training of youth recreation coaching staff to ensure alignment throughout K-12 athletics.
  • Manage a flexible work schedule including being present at interscholastic athletic events, recreation events, and other events as needed or requested.
  • Perform other assignments as assigned by the District.

Athletic Internship Programming

  • Provide oversight in the development and implementation of an athletics internship program to assist in game management activities.
  • Ensure the athletics department fosters positive, working relationships with local colleges when partnering services.
  • Execute affiliation agreements with local colleges.

Game Management

  • Oversee game management, and provide guidance and assistance to the Assistant Director in areas such as:
    • Contract the services of officials and hire as soon as possible to assure highly competent officials for all interscholastic contests.When appropriate the athletic director shall use the coaches state rating cards as recommendations as to the hiring of competent officials.
    • Provide advice and assistance to designated personnel on any matters related to the interscholastic and youth recreation programs – e.g., publicity, transportation, equipment, use and needs of facilities, contest conditions, team pictures, and others.
    • Coordinate all athletics on a year-round basis and the use of all athletic facilities.He/she, or their appointed designee, shall supervise the readiness of all contest facilities, equipment, and personnel for interscholastic and youth recreation events.
    • Administer contests and tournaments.
    • Partner with local colleges to develop and implement an internship program to assist in game management activities.

Student Athlete Training, Support, & Recognition

  • Oversee student athlete training, support & recognition, and provide guidance and assistance to the Assistant Director in areas such as:
    • Develop and implement appropriate training programs to be made available to athletes throughout the year. Training programs may include, but are not limited to:
      • Strength Training
      • Speed & Agility
      • Skill Progression
      • Mental Toughness
      • Other coooperative programs
    • Develop and implement adequate academic supports to be made available to student athletes throughout the school year. Academic support programs may include, but are not limited to:
      • Student Mentoring
      • Tutoring
      • Academic Reporting & Tracking
    • Coordinate college signing events.
    • Communicate available programs out to community, staff, and students.

Marketing & Communication

  • Send reminders to schools and officials of coming athletic events.
  • Establish and implement marketing plan for CPS Recreation Program.
  • Meet quarterly (or as needed) with established Youth Recreation Advisory Committee.
  • Establish and implement a communication plan for the community and oversight of program website content for upcoming dates and information for all interscholastic athletics and youth recreation events.
  • Coordinate Social Media communications.
  • Serve as liaison for Booster Clubs.
