School Health/Nurse Consultant

Plan and implement activities supporting Wayne County districts in developing and maintaining quality school nursing services, school health services, and other programs through professional development, community partnerships, and other Coordinated School Health initiatives that support school improvement. Provide consultant and leadership services to Wayne County schools to promote quality school nursing and school health policies, programs, and services that safely, legally, and effectively address the physical, social, and mental health needs of students.     
                                               

DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES:           
                                

  • Provide consultation, leadership, and professional development opportunities for quality school nursing and school health services to Wayne County school districts and Great Start Readiness Program sites.
  • Serve as a liaison and resource advocate in school nursing and school health services for Wayne County districts, Great Start Readiness Program sites and partnering community agencies
  • Participate as an active member of the Wayne County Whole Community, Whole School, Whole Child Alliance (WSCCA).
  • Monitor, interpret, synthesize, and disseminate relevant research findings and other information related to public and school health, school nursing practice, current legal issues, and new legislation that impacts school health programs and services
  • Interpret and disseminate model policies, standards, and best practices to promote safe, legal, and effective school health services programs
  • Explore reimbursement systems and other funding sources to support school nursing and school health programs and services
  • Collaborate as an active team member in organizational projects as assigned
  • Work in conjunction with other RESA staff to ensure client needs are met in the most efficient and effective manner
  • Collaborate with local, regional, and state school health advocates to expand the level of knowledge and understanding among educators, parents, and the general public of the critical link between health status and a student’s capacity to learn
  • Plan, use professional judgment, and act effectively to carry out the functions of this position within the direction provided by RESA mission and goals and Instructional Services goals and objectives
  • Perform other duties as assigned

QUALIFICATIONS:

Education
 

  • Bachelors of Science in Nursing required
  • Master’s degree in nursing, public health, or related field required
  • State of Michigan Registered Nurse (RN) licensure required
  • Michigan Department of Education Professional School Nurse Certificate preferred

Experience
 

  • Minimum of three years practical experience working as a school nurse required
  • Demonstrated experience providing school nursing and school health related consultation and leadership to local school districts and community agencies required
  • Demonstration of recent work with school personnel in integrating current research-based school health strategies into the school environment
  • Demonstrated skill in effective problem-solving, decision-making, and verbal and written communication required

SKILLS AND ABILITIES
 

  • Demonstrated leadership and experience in the fields of school nursing, school health, and public health required
  • Demonstrated consultation, training, group facilitation, and process skills required
  • Demonstrated ability in developing and maintaining community partnerships required
  • Demonstrated skill in proposal development and budget management preferred

Compensation: 

Current WCSSF 10-Month Salary Schedule – Schedule H - Effective July 1, 2019 ($64,918 - $98,250 FY) and a comprehensive and competitive benefits package including health/dental/vision/life and long-term disability insurance. Generous time off including 19 paid holidays, sick and personal business days. Membership in the Michigan Public Schools Employee Retirement System www.michigan.gov/ors. The position is represented by the Wayne County Salaried Staff Federation Local 4479 (WCSSF).
