Early Elementary Special Education Teacher

Reports to:                          Early Elementary Principal

Minimum Qualifications:

  • BA/BS Degree in Special Education
  • Possess valid Michigan teaching certificate with special education endorsement
  • Must meet NCLB highly qualified requirements to teach special education at the elementary level

Preferences:

  • Successful teaching experience
  • Experience in a self-contained classroom
  • Experience in early childhood
  • Endorsements in Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD), Emotional Impairment                                                     (EI), or Cogntive Impairment (CI)
  • Prior experience working with students who have diverse learning, communication and behavior needs

Job Description

  • Ensure individualized instructional programs, services and supports are designed for each student on their caseload
  • Collaborate with general education teachers to ensure appropriate accommodations and modifications are made in order for students to access to the general education curriculum
  • Maintain appropriate record keeping and input on program effectiveness
  • Work with support staff and general education teachers for instructional and behavioral planning
  • Secure and maintain a CPI endorsement and participate in the Crisis Prevention Intervention Team
  • Consult and participate in the development of instructional strategies and interventions that meet the needs of Tier 3 students
  • Maintain an equitable, not equal, mindset when delivering service and supporting special education students
  • Incorporate technology, differentiated instructional practices and interventions with students
  • Use data for informed decision making and progress monitoring on IEP goals and objectives
  • Facilitate collaboration and communication with multiple service providers, parents and community agencies
  • Develop and maintain a positive rapport with students, parents, staff and the community.
